As with most mountainous states, Vermont has recently been re-discovering its golf roots, right at the base of its myriad ski mountains. For Northeast duffers, the re-emergence of mountain golf courses like Warren's Sugarbush is nothing short of heavenly. Greens fees get to the $70 range in peak months, but twilight golf and off-season tee times are easier on the wallet. Either way, it's well worth the investment to breathe the clean air of Vermont - mixed with the lingering smell of your prior night's Ben & Jerry's sampling. (Waterbury, where B&J is located is just a short distance from Sugarbush.) Woodstock, VT's Country Club has a Robert Trent Jones-designed course that may be one of New England's most idyllic. Greens fees are reasonable, considering the splendor, and discounts are applied when you stay at the historic inn. This place is lovers of each other AND lovers of golf as well - not so much for the Guys Weekend Away.
Keep in mind that the colder weather often present on Vermont golf courses can affect the distance of your drives, especially. Use a ball with less compression than you ordinarily would. Look for a golf ball made for women, which will typically have a compression of around 80. The lower compression allows the ball to fly further in the cold.
